Prof Dr Michael Hess

Dr. Michael Hess studied Veterinary Medicine at the Free University in Berlin, Germany, where he performed a doctoral thesis on Avian Adeno-associated Virus at the Institute of Poultry Diseases. Afterwards he focused on fowl adenovirus infections. In 2000 he left the University and joined Intervet UK as Head of the Department of Avian Research. In 2001 he moved to the Veterinary University in Vienna following an invitation to become Guest Professor for Poultry Medicine. He became Full Professor in 2003 and since 2008 he is Head of the Department for Farm Animals and Veterinary Public Health.

The poultry clinic in Vienna has a strong interest in infectious diseases, with regard to research, services and teaching. Research is supported by different public and private organizations. Since 2014 the clinic harbours a Christian Doppler Laboratory for Innovative Poultry Vaccines, a collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on fowl adenovirus infections and histomonosis. For diagnostics services the clinic runs an ISO/IEC accredited laboratory. Dr. M. Hess was the first president of the European College for Poultry Veterinary Science (ECPVS) and in 2014 the clinic started an acknowledged residency program within ECPVS.

Dr. M. Hess is a member of the Adenovirus Study Group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Avian Diseases and an Associate Editor of Avian Pathology. He published more than 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts and he was involved in filing several patents in the area of infectious diseases in poultry.
